Ontario – meet Little Norway Pale Lager. A long-time brewery and local favourite, Little Norway is a North American Pale Lager that was brewed to commemorate Gravenhurst’s 80-year-old partnership with Norway.
The history of Muskoka has always been an inspiration for the line-up of Sawdust City core brands. In the case of Little Norway Pale Lager, it’s a nod to the early 1940s, as World War II gripped Europe and Canada opened its arms to an occupied Norway, where an alliance was forged between the two countries. It was then Gravenhurst became home to over 3,000 Norwegian airmen as our small airport became the base to hone their aviation skills and thus became endearingly known as: ‘Little Norway’.
75 years later, in 2014, the team at Sawdust City travelled to Norway to help create a national beer that paid tribute to that long-lasting friendship and to honour those airmen that gave so much.
In collaboration with Norway’s Arendals Bryggeri, Sam Corbeil, Brewmaster at Sawdust City Brewing Company, brewed a traditional European lager with North American craft beer sensibilities. Light and crisp, but hopped to the hilt with Saaz hops, Little Norway Pale Lager is a beer that honours the past – but embraces the future.
Sam explains, “ For me, Little Norway Pale Lager began with a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to Norway and collaborate with the Brewmaster at the Arendals Bryygeri. Not only did I get to develop a recipe with this accomplished brewer, but it allowed me to learn about the historic friendship that exists between Norway and Canada; a friendship that goes back 75 years, all the way to WWII. Having trained in Germany, developing this recipe allowed me to bring the best of what I’d learned about old world lagers and bring them to the Ontario & Norwegian markets. A delicate biscuity malt body is balanced nicely with a sharp, peppery hop bite. And it all comes together with a crisp, clean lager finish. When I first imagined this beer, I pictured the perfect beer for sitting on the edge of the dock and enjoying a lazy, summer afternoon at the cottage. And honestly, I think that’s exactly what we’ve been able to create. Man, I can’t wait for summer.”
Little Norway pairs great with grilled chicken or seafood, hard cheese and even lemon-based desserts.
