Our Dog-tober initiative is inspired by Bella and Baxter, brewery owners Rob & Karla Engman’s beloved Schnoodles. Karla shares her story about the inspiration behind this important initiative.

“I have always loved animals. I grew up on a farm and was surrounded by them but they were never allowed in the house (especially the piglets, rabbits and chickens and yes, I did try to sneak them in). As a child I wouldn’t go to bed until every stuffed animal I owned was in bed with me – usually at least 20 of them HAD to be tucked in beside me. Fast forward more than a few years and that passion for animals has never waned. We have to give a voice to those who cannot speak, and I believe it is our responsibility to protect and lovingly care for all the animals that need our help. That is why we at Sawdust City Brewing Company, started the Bella and Baxter Initiative; to help support the local no-kill rescue shelters by not only raising funds but also contributing food, blankets and anything else that is needed.
The name of the program is inspired by our two Schnoodles; Bella and Baxter. They have always played a large role in our long-time happy place. Baxter is 18 and 6 months, and sadly, last year Bella crossed the rainbow bridge at 17. The Bella and Baxter Initiative donates 100% of all we collect, while our amazing team donates their time as well. We are truly committed to this program and for the month of ‘Dog-Tober’ every week will bring something new that will be fun, but also raise the much-needed donations for our local shelters.
When I was little my Dad would tell me, “We don’t let farm dogs or cats (or piglets) in the house, but when you have your own place you can do whatever you like.” Well, I haven’t been without a furry or feathered friend in over 38 years. We appreciate your continued support and contributions to the Bella and Baxter Initiative, helping our local shelters to continue to offer safe havens and forever homes for those animals in need of protection and care. Come on out and support the cause, or you can drop off donations any time of the year at Sawdust City Brewing Company.”

The whole Sawdust City team is thrilled for this opportunity to give back to animals in need in our local communities that we feel privileged to call home.

Thank you for your support, from all of us at Sawdust City Brewing Company.
